What to Do if You Find a Leak in Your Roof
Roof leaks are one annoyance that homeowners hope they never have to deal with. They are always inconvenient, they detract from your home’s comfort, and they can potentially do a lot of damage. If you hear that dreaded drip-drip-drip coming from your ceiling, here are some steps you should take to minimize the damage. Remember that the longer you wait, the more costly your roof repairs could be. Call Elite Roofing and Restoration Services as soon as you notice a leak, and we will come out and repair it immediately, rain or shine.
Find the Leak
To get a leak repaired, you need to know where it’s coming from. It’s not always located directly above the water dripping from your ceiling. The water can travel many different routes from your roof to your ceiling, so some investigation is required.
Take a flashlight and examine your attic space and rafters immediately after a storm. If there have been no recent storms, soak your roof with a water hose to find where water is seeping through to your home’s interior. Wait until your roof is dry to go up onto it and look for cracks or missing shingles. Better yet, call a pro to do it, like our team at Elite Roofing. We have all the equipment we need, and we are experienced with climbing and navigating roofs.
Contain the Leak
Once you’ve found the source of the leak, you’ll want to contain the dripping water so that it doesn’t spread out and damage your flooring. Look for bulges and discoloration on your ceiling. They are a sign that water is pooling up there.
Grab a large container like a trash can and place it under the leak. If your ceiling is bulging but not leaking, take a screwdriver and punch a hole in the center of the bulge. This gives the collected water a place to drain from, and the trash can will catch it.
Fix Your Roof
Obviously, you’ll want to get your roof repaired before the next storm rolls through. Elite Roofing provides emergency roof repair. We will come to your home and place a tarp on the roof to prevent it from leaking for the duration of the storm. After the weather no longer presents a danger to our team, we go up on the roof, find the problem, and fix it.
Prevent Future Leaks
Preventive maintenance can save you from having to deal with leaks. Do frequent inspections of your roof from ground level, especially after high winds or hail have hit your area. Look for holes, dents, or missing shingles and loose flashing around your chimney or vents. These are prime spots for a leak to begin. Check your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are draining properly, and don’t let branches or soggy leaves stay on your roof.
Call Elite Roofing to Fix Your Leaky Roof
Remember that roof leaks never go away on their own. The longer you leave a leak, the more time it has to damage your rafters, attic floor, ceiling, and home interior. Don’t let the price of immediate repair stop you; it will only cost you more down the road. If your roof is fewer than 15 years old, it can probably be spot repaired instead of replaced entirely.
If you’re experiencing a roof leak, or if you just need a professional inspection to prolong the life of your roof, call Elite Roofing and Restoration Services today! We perform roof inspections, repairs, and replacements, and we are always happy to answer your questions.
